I warned last week that the Dems need to not get complacent but it’s hard not to be, just a little….
Unfortunately, I’m already disgusted with both candidates. I know the voters are like little children and the politicians feel that they need to lie to them for their own good but I couldn’t believe the BS that was coming out of both of these guys’ mouths as they competed to see who could promise the biggest tax cuts to the voters. Obama’s giving out health care, McCain is giving health care vouchers (or something) and then McCain ups the ante and offers to pay your mortgage off if you vote for him or some kind of nonsense…
WITH WHAT MONEY? McCain seems to think hes going to get the whole $700Bn he’s now promising by cutting $89Bn worth of earmarks but wait until bridges to somewhere start collapsing and schools don’t get built and 11,000 other projects don’t get done that were considered vital to someone. It doesn’t seem to occur to anyone that the $89Bn in question has a tendency to create jobs, even if the job is studying the DNA of bears. No bear studies, no scientists and another 890,000 $100,000 jobs go down the toilet.
John McCain seems to think earmark spending is money that is just burned up, as opposed to the $612.5Bn in PLANNED military spending for 2009. Obama seems to think the money will come from the rich but the rich are all going to be taking some very, very fat tax write-offs this year and will be able to carry those losses forward through a potential tax increase until they can get a Republican back in the White House. So both candidates have a very misguided view of what our budget is going to look like next year or they are just plain out lying their asses off to get elected – either way I’m not at all happy. This irresponsible BS caused the dollar to drop for the first time in two weeks as foreigners watching last night’s circus suddenly rethought the idea of keeping their money in this country.
What McCain actually said about mortgages: "As president of the United States, Alan, I would order the secretary of the treasury to immediately buy up the bad home loan mortgages in America and renegotiate at the new value of those homes — at the diminished value of those homes and let people be able to make those — be able to make those payments and stay in their homes. Is it expensive? Yes. But we all know, my friends, until we stabilize home values in America, we’re never going to start turning around and creating jobs and fixing our economy. And we’ve got to give some trust and confidence back to America. I know how the do that, my friends. And it’s my proposal, it’s not Sen. Obama’s proposal, it’s not President Bush’s proposal. But I know how to get America working again, restore our economy and take care of working Americans. Thank you." So if McCain is elected you need to immediately stop paying you mortgage and do whatever it takes to devalue your home (paint it black, knock down some walls, dump some toxic waste in the yard…). Then Jonh will come in and buy it from the nasty bank and give you a new loan at the reduced rate and reduced value! Excellent….
The format of the debate was also a disgrace – designed for people who don’t have the attention span to listen to an answer that takes more than 120 seconds. Effectively, the whole debate for McCain was about landing a "zinger’ whenever he could and he was furiously scribbling down anything he could attack with as Obama spoke. Obama, on the other hand, was too reserved in his responses to McCain, that’s two debates in a row where McCain comes off like a fighter and Obama just plays defense, too much the lawyer…
Steve Colbert was funny, pointing out a Fox news poll found 86% of their viewers felt McCain won the debate so congrats to McCain I guess for only losing 14% of the Fox audience.
