Generating a Single AI Image Has a Deep Environmental Cost

There are hidden environmental consequences to AI image generators like Midjourney and Dall-E

A new study released on Friday revealed that generating a single AI image takes as much energy as charging a smartphone, carrying a larger carbon footprint than AI text. Midjourney and ChatGPT’s Dall-E AI image creators could produce more carbon than taking a 4.1 mile drive, the study said. 

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and at AI unicorn startup Hugging Face teamed up to look into 13 tasks, from AI text summaries to text classification, to measure how much carbon dioxide each task produces per every 1,000 grams…
